the PRAYER. . .

Almighty and ever-living God, you hold together all things in heaven and on earth.  In your great mercy receive the prayers of all your children, and give to all the world the Spirit of your truth and peace, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

the READING. . .

They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father. . . ." (john 14 . 15-21)

the DEVOTION. . .

The passage reads like one of those laws from algebra class.  If a=b, and b=c, then a=c!  If "They-who-have-my-commandments-and-keep-them" are "those-who-love-me". . .  and, if "those-who-love-me" are those who "will-be-loved-by-my-Father". . .  then, "They-who-have-my-commandments-and-keep-them" are those who "will-be-loved-by-my-Father".  However. . .

what if "They-who-have-my-commandments" DON'T keep them?

and what if "They-who-have-my-commandments" CAN'T keep them?

and what if "They-who-have-my-commandments" WON'T keep them?

or what if they don't, even, have god's commandments to start with?  What then?

Well, the truth is, they still. . .  they STILL. . .  they STILL. . .  "will be loved-by-my-Father"!

It's called mercy!  Forgiveness!  Charity!  Grace!  No ifs!  No thens!  Those who "will-be-loved-by-my-Father" will be loved by my Father!  The gift isn't just for those who have the commandments!  The gift isn't just for those who keep those commandments!  The gift is for everyone!  Sinners and saints alike!  After all, the Son wasn't sent into the world to condemn, but to save!

Getting Out the WORD - the fifth sunday of easter

the PRAYER. . .

Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life.  Give us grace to love one another, to follow in the way of his commandments, and to share his risen life with all the world, for he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

the READING. . .

"Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father..." (john 14:1-14 )

the DEVOTION. . .

"Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess unto thee, that we are by nature sinful and unclean..."  That's how it all began for me.  The gospel according to the Service Book and HymnalPraise to you, O Christ.

We are sinners...  in thought, word, and deed!  We are sinners...  by what we do and by what we don't do!  We are sinners...  not loving god with our whole heart...  not loving our neighbor as ourselves!  We didn't!  We don't!  We wouldn't!  We won't!  We couldn't!  We can't!  And, so, we cry out to god...  have mercy on us!  Forgive us!  Renew us!  Lead us!  so that we delight...  so that we walk...  in your will and your ways. . .

[Jesus said to the disciples,] "Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater..."

We are sinners.  That's true.  But we are sinners saved and sinners redeemed!  We are sinners.  But we are sinners transformed...  sinners transforming...  We are sinners.  But we are, at the same time, saints!
