getting out the WORD - the day of pentecost PDF Print E-mail

the PRAYER...
O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

the READING...
When [Jesus]had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit... ."

John 20:19-23

the DEVOTION...
It's been one of those weeks. There I was, minding my own business, and along comes a song and worms its way into my brain and it won't give it a rest! Over and over and over! Again and again and again! "Lord, I Lift Your Name on High!" Not so much the whole song as it is the refrain! "You came from heaven to earth to sh-o-o-ow the way, from earth to the cross my de-e-ebt to pay, from the cross to the grave, from the grave to the sky, Lord, I lift your name on hi-i-i-igh." It's driving me crazy!

But then, it has reminded me that there's a flow to the story. A corridor, a conduit, if you will. And this past Sunday, I realized the same's true of the Spirit! From Sinai to the Tabernacle... from the Tabernacle to the Temple... (and here's where it gets interesting) from the Temple to Jesus! And then, here, on Pentecost, from Jesus to the Church! The Word became flesh and never stops becoming! First, Jesus! Then, us! It's just like the voice from the throne proclaims at the end of the Revelation, "The heaven... the tabernacle... the temple... the dwelling place... the home of God...

... IS RIGHT HERE!"
